Berger, Leopold

Berger, Leopold/Lavoslav (Bonyhád, 1843/4 – Osijek, 1906), merchant.

Initially ran the shop together with his brother Jonas. Wife: Helena née Schwarz (Szeged, 1850). Children: Sigmund (Bonyhád, 1873), Ernestina (Vienna, 1877), Adele (Osijek, 1879), Wilma married Racz (Osijek, 1884), Gustav (Osijek, 1887). Native of Osijek since 1883. Member of the presidency of the Upper Town Jewish Community in 1900 and member of the Upper Town Hevra Kadisha.

Bošković, Marko

Bošković, Marko (Lovas, 1869 – Auschwitz, 1942), wood merchant.

Parents Vilim (Darda, 1825 – Osijek, 6 December 1912) and Sali/Roza née Langefelder. Father Vilim was a merchant and lived in Darda for a time. He married Janka/Anka née Boskovitz (1878–1938). Enjoyed native rights in Osijek since 1934. Member of the Croatian singing society “Lipa”. Member of the Lower Town Jewish community and member of its presidency since 1912. Taken to the Tenje camp in May 1942, perished in Auschwitz.

Herrmann, David

Herrmann, David (Paks, Tolna, 1823 – Osijek, 1908), merchant and founder of the company S. Weiss and D. Herrmann in Osijek in 1852 and a royal and court supplier.

He lived in the Lower Town and was a Lower Town representative from 1876 to 1886. Married to Netty née Kohn (Budapest, 1838 – Osijek, 24 February 1909). Children: Julijo (1861), Dragutin (1865), Bela (1867), Edmund (1875) and Theresa married Deutsch. From 1874 he was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Crafts in Osijek. He was a respected and esteemed citizen of Osijek. He lived in Gospodarska Street.

Herrmann, Bela

Herrmann, Bela (Osijek, 1867 – Auschwitz, 1942), wholesaler.

Son of David and Neti/Nanette née Kohn. After finishing high school, he continued to run his father’s company (Salamon Weisz & David Herrmann) in Donji grad. He expanded his business with his brother Dragutin and founded the First Slavonian Institute for the Procurement of Uniforms and Equipment. In 1906, he married Rosa née Reichsmann (Đakovo, 1882 – Osijek, 1921). The marriage produced sons Vilim (1907) and Makso (1909). From 1914 to the spring of 1941, he was president of the Jewish Religious Community of Donji grad, and from 1927, president of the Jewish Supply House (Old People’s Home) and president of the Board of Trustees. In 1934 he was a member of the delegation that traveled to Belgrade for the funeral of King Alexander. He was a member of the Croatian Civic Reading Room in the lower town, as well as a member of the “Menora” lodge from Osijek.

Herrmann, Dragutin

Herrmann, Dragutin (Osijek, 1865 – Osijek, 1942), merchant.

Son of David Herrmann, a prominent merchant, and Netty née Kohn. Brother of Bela Herrmann. With his brother Bela, he founded the first Slavonian Institute for the Procurement of Uniforms and Equipment. He was an active member of the Lower Town Jewish Community.

Hirschfeld, Ljudevit

Hirschfeld, Ludwig/Ljudevit (Mágocs, Hungary, 1862 – Osijek, 1934), merchant.

Son of Lazar and Netti, née Münster. Wife Eugenija, née Münster (Osijek, 1872). Native of Osijek since 1911. He had a glass business in the Lower Town. He was active in the Committee for the Construction of the Lower Town Synagogue and an active member for many years (25 years) in the Lower Town Jewish Community, where he was a councilor and treasurer. Benefactor. He served as secretary of the Israelite Women’s Society in the Lower Town for over twenty years. He left a large financial contribution to the Lower Town Jewish Community in his will. Member of the Croatian Civic Reading Room in Osijek.

Kohlbach, Oskar

Kohlbach, Oskar (Acs, Komárno County, Hungary, 1871 – Osijek, 1932), physician.

Zionist leader in Osijek. Son of Samuel and Henrietta. Married to Kamila née Freund (Ričan, Czech Republic, 1879). He was a prominent member of the Donjograd Municipality and on the board of directors since 1899. From the summer of 1902, he was the head of the committee for the construction of the Donjograd synagogue. He only acquired his homeland in 1901. Children: lawyer Oton (Osijek, 1910) and Dragutin (Osijek, 1912). He was a member of the Croatian Civic Reading Room in Osijek, the “Lipa” Singing Society in Osijek, and the founder of the Sokol Society in Donji grad. From 1906, he was vice-president of the “Theodor Herzl” Zionist Society as well as a member of the Jewish Academic Cultural Club Judeja in Zagreb. As a doctor, he was employed at the District Workers’ Insurance Office.

Krauss, Julijo

Krauss, Julijo (Osijek, 15 Apr 1878 – Osijek, 4 May 1942), spice merchant and entrepreneur, son of Samuel and Johanna née Borowitz.

He married Antonija née Fuchs (Đakovo, 1885). From 1906 to 1932, he ran the company “Samuel Kraus i sin” in Donji grad with his father Samuel. He then continued to run the company with his brother Maks, but as “Samuel Kraus i sin, agent for technical and radio equipment and office supplies and mechanic shop in Osijek”. He was an active member of the Osijek Jewish religious community Donji grad.

Krauss, Samuel

Krauss Samuel (Kaposkeresztúr, Somogy County, 1847 – Osijek, 21 April 1932), grocer.

Married Johanna née Borowitz (Bonyhád/Tolna, 1848). A native of Osijek since 1880. Children: Armin (Osijek, 11 March 1871 – Zagreb, 6 April 1898), Bela (Osijek, 6 August 1873); Albert (Osijek, 1877), Julijo (Osijek, 1879) and Makso (1886). In 1906, he founded the company “Samuel Kraus & son”, a grocer’s and fruit trade, with his son Juli (1879-1942). The company operated until 1936. He was an active member of the Jewish community of Donji Grad.

Obersohn rođ. Kohn, Thereze

Obersohn, Therese née Kohn (Darda, 25 Mar 1840 – Osijek, 23 May 1926), long-time president of the Jewish Ladies’ Aid Society of the Lower town of Osijek.

Member of the Lower town Jewish community. Wife of Aleksandar Obersohn (Veliki Bečkerek 1834–21 Feb 1912), living in Vukovar. She married him in Osijek in 1859. Parents Mavro and Babeta. With Aleksandar she had a son Eduard (Darda/Osijek, 27 Jan 1860–?). She was part of the Lower Town Jewish community. She served as president of the Ladies’ Association until 1921.

Rubinstein, A. M.

Rubinstein, Avram Majer (Mohilov, Russia 1840/1841 – Osijek, 1921), cantor in the Lower Town synagogue.

Arrived in Osijek in the 1880s. First he was cantor in the Upper Town synagogue, and from 1888 in the Lower Town synagogue. He died at the age of 81.
